On the 23rd of November 2006 at about 6:30 in the evening his friend living in the same Society as him came running to tell him that his 65 years old father had collapsed. He accompanied his friend to his house on the fourth floor and saw his father lying on the floor bleeding from the head and vomiting. Sumedh quickly assessed the situation, called for an ambulance and began giving first aid to control bleeding. He improvised a stretcher with a blanket and carried the casualty down the narrow staircase to the ambulance. On the way to the hospital, he checked the victim’s ABC and found that he was not breathing. Sumedh started CPR on the victim but opted for mouth to nose breathing since the victim’s mouth was full of vomit. Resuscitation revived the victim and there were adequate signs of life when the casualty was admitted in the Deenanath Hospital Pune soon thereafter.
For displaying alacrity, expertise and concern in helping a fellow being in distress and for unhesitating willingness to serve the community Sumedh Joshi is awarded the Rashtriya Life Saving Society (India) Certificate of Appreciation.

Kavita Sawant a resident of 38/18 Vinayak, Prabhat Road, Pune is a life member of the Rashtriya Life Saving Society (India) having completed her ‘First Aid’ training with the Society in November 2005. On 8th January 2006 at about 6 pm she was proceeding to her Fitness Class at Om Super Market near Model Colony, when she saw a motorcyclist hit an old lady and speed away. The lady fell down bleeding profusely. A crowed gathered around the victim but none came forward to help. Kavita got down to attend to the victim, who it was seen had suffered a serious head injury. Kavita first called for an ambulance but later with the help of a journalist from ‘Sakal’ Newspaper chose to rush the victim to a hospital in an auto-rickshaw trying her best en-route to control the lady’s bleeding and keeping a vigil on her general condition and breathing. The lady was unconscious and admitted to the Ratna Memorial Hospital first and later shifted to Joshi Hospital. Kavita located the victim’s relatives and informed them about the accident. About 60 years of age, the lady remained in coma until unfortunately she succumbed to her injuries 21 days later.
