The Genesis…and beyond...

The Origin..

The Rashtriya Life Saving Society (India) came into being on 2 August 1998 through an understanding signed between representatives of the Royal Life Saving Society (Commonwealth), the Royal Life Saving Society (Australia), the Indian Maritime Foundation and RLSS (I). At the time, Pune was experiencing deaths by drowning at regular intervals. RLSS (I), first learnt about lifesaving and then for the next two years set about showing people elements of "Lifesaving" and how simple skills acquired by people could equip them with the ability to save lives.

Promotion...

Rashtriya Life Saving Society (India) continues to promote awareness in lifesaving, first aid and road safety and has carried out more than 1000 demonstrations to promote awareness in first aid and life saving besides, training first aiders and lifesavers. In May 2000, RLSS (I) conducted its first "Lifeguard" Course and in December 2000, following a spate of deaths by drowning, the Pune Municipal Corporation appointed the Society its "Honorary Consultant" for safer swimming in Pune. The Society has conducted over 200 courses to date [Nov 06], having trained volunteers in a number of towns in the country. In the process the Society has trained over 8000 first aid volunteers, lifesavers and lifeguards countrywide. For a country of our size this number should have been in lakhs but lack of resources has prevented us from training more. In Pune alone, more than 2500 first aiders, lifesavers and lifeguards, who are operatiing at various swimming venues, contributing to safer swimming for all. A large portion of the lifesaving training deals with "First Aid". Consequently, an RLSS (I) trained individual is not only useful and effective in water but also on land. Through its lifesaving and first aid education programme, RLSS (I) aspires to lead the way in community education and safety in the country.

SLTCs...

The RLSS (I )has captive swimming pools and has established Swimming & Life Saving Training Centres [SLTCs] at Wanawadi and Kondhwa. The Pune District Branch HQ operates from Balgandharva Swimming Pool in Shivaji Nagar, Deccan Gymkhana, Pune 411 005. An other SLTC has been established at Chitanya Health Club, Pune. The Society’s SLTCs hum with activity, as instructors, coaches, lifeguards and lifesavers impart instructions with considerable acumen, dedication and enthusiasm. The society has a success rate of 90% in teaching swimming. The SLTCs have also instituted programmes like “Rookie Life Guard” for young enthusiastic lifesavers and “Water Smart” for young swimmers.

The International Connection...

The International Life Saving Federation [ILS] with its presence in 100 countries and the Royal Life Saving Society (Commonwealth) [RLSS (C)], functioning in 55 countries spearhead a worldwide movement to promote awareness in lifesaving and first aid procedure and technique. The Rashtriya Life Saving Society (India) [RLSS (I)], as a full member of the ILS and the Official Branch of the RLSS (C) is part of that movement. The aim is to motivate people, specially the young to learn skills to help a fellow man. In the present environment full of violence and its constant threat these skills assume greater relevance now than ever before. The above ‘Organisations’ have introduced "Sports" as a means to popularise the lifesaving concept. In the end it is hoped that every water sports person will be a lifesaver and every sport person a confident first aid volunteer. RLSS (I) in India wishes to go further, aiming to take the skills to every district of the country, encouraging every one between age 10 & 50 to learn the skills to help a person in distress.
